Description
This sector comprises three subsectors, which group economic units primarily engaged in real estate services, the rental of movable goods, and the rental of intangible assets. Economic units classified in the first subsector are engaged in activities such as the rental of homes, offices and commercial premises, theaters and other buildings, as well as the rental of land and services related to real estate. Real estate is characterized by having a fixed physical location and being rented for relatively long periods. Economic units classified in the Movable Goods Rental Services subsector are engaged in activities such as the rental of cars, trucks and other land transport; household and personal goods; and agricultural, fishing, industrial, commercial, and service machinery and equipment. In the Trademark, Patent, and Franchise Rental Services subsector, which consists of a single branch, a sub-branch, and a class of activity, the rented assets are intangible (such as trade names and images, industrial designs, procedures, and methods of operation), and their use by third parties is subject to payment. The rental periods for intangible assets can vary, although they are generally long. Economic entities that rent these assets are characterized by their oversight of the asset's use during the rental period, a production process not present in the same way in other subsectors. This oversight protects the intangible asset; for example, in the case of a franchise, a lack of adherence to rules and procedures damages the image of the rented asset and, therefore, its value.
