Description
This sector comprises economic units primarily engaged in building construction; the construction of civil engineering works; the performance of specialized construction work such as site preparation; and the supervision of construction to ensure adherence to schedules and quality standards in accordance with applicable regulations (the supervising units do not construct the buildings themselves nor are they responsible for the construction project). There are substantial differences in the types of equipment, workforce skills, and other inputs required by the economic units in this sector. To highlight these differences and the underlying variations in the production function, this sector is divided into three subsectors. Economic units are initially divided into two types: those that undertake projects requiring several different construction activities and those that specialize in a single activity. Economic units primarily engaged in building construction are further separated into residential and non-residential building construction and are classified under subsector 236, Building Construction. Subsector 237, Civil Engineering Construction, classifies the construction of civil engineering works and specialized work requiring specific skills and equipment for civil engineering projects. Subsector 238, Specialized Construction Work, classifies economic units primarily engaged in specialized activities necessary for the construction of all types of buildings and structures, such as masonry, painting, or electrical work. Economic units in the construction sector may operate independently or under contract with another economic unit or property owners. They may produce complete projects or only parts of projects. Economic units frequently subcontract some or all of the work involved in a project or work together in partnerships. This sector includes new construction, expansion, remodeling, maintenance, and repair of buildings.
