Description

This sector comprises economic units primarily engaged in the purchase and sale (without transformation) of capital goods, raw materials, and supplies used in production, as well as the purchase and sale of other goods when they are resold to other merchants, distributors, manufacturers, and producers of goods and services. This wholesale trade can be conducted through traditional methods or via the internet (through their own websites or through internet platforms provided by third parties), or other electronic means. It also includes economic units solely engaged in buying or selling; that is, economic units that purchase goods but do not sell them directly, instead distributing them for resale to other economic units with which they share the same business name, as well as those that receive these goods and sell them without having purchased them. Economic units primarily engaged in acting as intermediaries between businesses in the purchase or sale of products are also classified in this sector; that is, those that promote the purchase or sale of goods owned by third parties in exchange for a commission. For an economic unit to be classified within this sector, three aspects must be reviewed: the type of goods it trades (wholesale always includes the sale of raw materials, intermediate goods, and capital goods or durable goods used in the production of goods and services, such as agricultural and industrial machinery, and trucks); the type of customer (wholesale always includes sales to other merchants, distributors, manufacturers, or producers of goods and services); and the method of marketing (wholesale always includes sales from a warehouse or sales office with little or no merchandise display, attracting customers generally by telephone, personalized marketing, or specialized advertising through electronic media, trade fairs, and exhibitions, and whose design and location are not intended to provide access to the general public). Although wholesale generally involves large-volume sales, durable goods not intended for private consumption can be sold individually. Economic units engaged in wholesale trade may provide additional services to the sale of goods, such as sorting, inventorying, packing, packaging and labeling.
