Description
This sector comprises economic units primarily engaged in the purchase and sale (without transformation) of goods for personal or household use, sold to individuals and households through traditional methods, the internet (via their own websites or third-party platforms), or other electronic means. Also classified in this sector are economic units primarily engaged in acting as business intermediaries for consumers, and between consumers, in the purchase or sale of products; that is, those that promote the purchase or sale of goods owned by third parties in exchange for a commission; television sales; and retail trade using any of the following methods: • Sales through vending machines; • Door-to-door sales; • Catalog sales; • Multilevel marketing; • Sales with product demonstrations in homes; • Telemarketing with sales via telephone. Economic units engaged in trade are classified as Retail Trade when they sell goods for personal or household use to individuals and households. Retail stores generally have public access (located and designed to attract customers) and merchandise displays to facilitate customer selection (merchandise available through sales staff, merchandise displayed in windows, showrooms, and aisles that allow customers to browse and choose their items). They also advertise extensively through flyers, media, and other means. Although retail businesses primarily sell to individuals and households, they sometimes sell to other businesses, such as car dealerships or gas stations, which are always considered retail. Retail establishments may also provide additional services beyond the sale of goods, such as packing, packaging, and home delivery.
